Daring to Dream

THE WOMEN OF ASHESI

By Linda Fiah
Class of 2005

On Thursday May 23rd, in response to an invitation by the deans, eight young women of Ashesi congregated in the small conference room of the campus administration building. The Dean of Academic Affairs, Professor Nana Apt; the Dean of Student and Community Affairs, Linda Young-Ribeiro; and the Director of Business Operations, Mildred Wulff, were there to meet and greet them. The purpose of this informal meeting was to provide an opportunity for these young women to share their concerns and views about life at Ashesi and beyond, and to create a forum to empower and support these students.  This was the birth of a new organization, "Women of Ashesi", a club whose mission is to help Ashesi's women to grow and develop into confident and successful leaders. Women of Ashesi is a social club whose ideals are synonymous with the core pillars of the College: Scholarship, Leadership, and Citizenship

This club serves as a forum whose members seek to promote the interest of women in a fast growing competitive global world.  Dr. Kwegyir Aggrey, an illustrious son of Ghana seems to have been ahead of his time when he made this profound statement:

When you educate a man, you educate an individual, but when you educate a woman you educate a nation.

Women of Ashesi seek to live his vision and to make it a reality in today's world.  As Mavis, a woman of Ashesi puts it, "Women of Ashesi has been a good initiative taken by the female members of the faculty because it is addressing issues concerning women in a primarily patriarchal society. It is good to know that other women are experiencing the same problems that I am, and it is very inspiring to know that others have been down this road before and have come out victorious."

Women of Ashesi is helping female students to strengthen their resolve to soar even higher than our present role models have, and ultimately, to realize our full potential.

The Women of Ashesi meet twice a month on Thursdays. Future plans include guest speakers, debates, and seminars.
