As the Executive Team begins the early process of determining the University’s next ten-year plan, several issues will need to be especially considered.
Challenges for Next Strategic Plan
-
Achieving a fully residential campus where students from all walks of life can live and learn together So far, Ashesi is failing its poorest students with respect to housing. Student housing that is provided on a commercial basis is simply out of the reach of the poorest. Housing for low-income students can be provided through a combination of approaches: Raising philanthropic funding to build student housing; expanding financial aid to cover housing; designing lower cost housing and enabling an affordable increase in housing capacity; and partnering with third party developers to develop commercial on-campus housing for paying students.
-
Extending Ashesi’s reach Given Ashesi’s success in proving its educational and economic model, the next Strategic Plan should explore ways to grow and expand Ashesi’s reach.
-
Succession planning and quality assurance As Ashesi matures and grows, it is extremely important that firm institutional quality assurance mechanisms be developed. Growth must be conducted in a manner that does not compromise quality. Rather, we must seek to enhance the quality of the Ashesi experience and create mechanisms that ensure this in the long term, regardless of who happens to be teaching at Ashesi. The University also needs to adopt mechanisms that ensure continuity and high performance as its leadership changes.
