Ashesi is a place of dreams and ambition.
A place that was built on the back of an ambitious vision for Africa, its leaders and young people. It was built on a vision which continues to inspire young people to dream far beyond their circumstances and what they believe they and Africa are capable of achieving.
Dreams are the starting point for many great leaders and Ashesi seeks to get the ball rolling for young people. While academic rigour and intellectual achievement are incredibly important, they become even more meaningful when paired with a deep desire to answer a niggling question, to fulfill a passion, or to serve the society. Ashesi, and The Office of Student and Community Affairs, urges students to identify those deep-down desires during their four years with us, through the liberal arts focus that runs through lecture rooms and through the spirit of inquiry that runs across the campus.
We provide guidance in career and personal development, health and well-being, and service and leadership. We also expose our students to the life skills that will help them to navigate adulthood, academia and professional life. In our community, choices are handed over to students, and we encourage them to take personal responsibility for, and ownership of decisions and outcomes.
The book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” written by Dr Seuss, is almost embarrassingly simple for those who crave an intellectual challenge, but its premise can be applied to the many life situations – dream high, expect pitfalls, deal with them, and carry on with your dream. I like to refer to it, because it reminds young people to keep plowing ahead. It suggests that in the midst of their choices, good and bad, they will accumulate wisdom and the skill of discernment, which will fine-tune and fuel their dreams and academic achievement.
“Congratulations! Today is your day.
You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away!
You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself, in a3ny direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.
...OH! THE PLACES YOU’LL GO!” - Dr Seuss
Many of us who rally behind students at Ashesi personally benefited from wonderful university experiences, and our greatest desire is to give them even more than we had. We hope that you will come to appreciate the ‘Ashesi Way’, fueled by curiosity and resources, and which is upheld by our three guiding pillars: scholarship, leadership and citizenship. Our students’ dreams are our dreams, and we urge them on with the optimistic words of Dr Seuss: “Oh! The places you’ll go.”
