Student Government

Welcome to the Student Government Page.

Derrick CrentsilAshesi University College is reaching an inflexion point in its history; a transition point that could either transform the culture and the community fabric for the better or worse. The life and convenience of each member of the Ashesi Community is about to be challenged by our migration to our new campus at Berekuso. I am excited by the thought of this adventure; my team and I have the strong belief that the Ashesi experience is just getting better.

As happens in every transition phase in life, challenges are inevitable; nevertheless, it is imperative that we, as a community, aim to brainstorm and find creative solutions around these in order to approach the image of the ‘ideal college experience’. The spirit in Ashesi is incredible and the joy that resonates with the voices of students here is remarkable. This is the stage at which I find the student body most malleable and can be worked on to yield the best results.

I believe that one of the steps to take in this phase is to empower the student body mentally to take initiatives and to buy into ones taken as well. The catalyst here would be the creation of enabling conditions to stir up the interest of students in these activities and to allow students to take initiatives and encourage peers to join the bandwagon. The Ashesi Student Council would tap into our role as the liaison between the students and the administration to root for support mechanisms to be put in place to facilitate students taking their ideas on to the next level.

We aim to create a pulsating community where there is always some form of activity taking place. In the end, students will graduate from Ashesi University College with Ashesi’s characteristic full vat of knowledge and a great sense of personal and social fulfillment. For us, we believe that this is one of the best times ever to be part of this community; a time when people can make significant marks that would be part of the college’s history.

This idea of developing the Ashesi Culture and Tradition is vital in making the Ashesi experience a memorable and unique one. For this to happen, I believe that we, as a student body, need to continue building a strong tradition; a tradition that encompasses the distinct experiences, talents and abilities of each and every one of us and is flavored by our bond as a unified, forward thinking inventive Ashesi student body; a strong bond that would last for centuries.

The Ashesi Honor Code and Community Service should be fortified in order for students to live them and not just live by them. The pillars of Ashesi, I deem, should be strengthened and branded on each student. It is my hope that the Ashesi culture and tradition would be developed to the point where Ashesi graduates are identical in terms of their values and motivation. Always have in mind this simple premise: “The future of Ashesi rests with the student body”.

We believe that we need to take new challenges and place them in context and excel beyond what we have ever done. We, Ashesi students, have a charge to keep; a mission to transform Africa. It all starts with the renewal of the mind and the ability to start taking the necessary steps, developing our talents, challenging the status quo and emitting the values which would inspire others. Let our passion to succeed be our compass with excellence as our true-north.

Sincerely,

Derrick Crentsil

President, Ashesi Student Council (2010/2011)
